There are various types of printer we use today. It has made the use of document very easy by giving us the hard copy of our necessary documents.
In this post, I will discuss about almost all types of printers with details. Before going ahead lets learn a little bit more about what is a printer.

What is printer?
The printer is a widely used output device of a computer that helps to generate a hard copy of our text and graphics on paper or other physical medium.
There are mainly two types of printers we use today. One is impact printers and other is non-impact printers.
Impact printer print the characters and graphics by hitting a ribbon where non impact printer print without hitting the paper directly.
Printers can be divided into various types. We can divide them by taking different characteristics into account. Let’s go to the types of printer.
Types of printer
There are many models of printers we use today. But every printer fall into two vast categories. The main two types of printers are as follows;
- Impact printers
- Non-impact printers
1. Impact printers
In impact printers the paper comes direct contact with the ink ribbon. It has the same mechanism like typewriter.
Some popular examples of impact printers are dot matrix printer, drum printer, line printer, daisy wheel printer, band printer, chain printer etc. which we have discussed here in bellow.
2. Non-impact printers
In non-impact printers the paper does not come in contact with the ink ribbon. This type of printers work using laser, xerographic, electrostatic or some other latest technologies.
Mostly used non-impact printers are inkjet printer, laser printer, LED printer, solid ink printer etc.
List of 9 most popular types of printers
- Dot matrix printers
- Daisy-Wheel Printers
- Ink jet printers
- Laser printers
- Line printers
- Drum printers
- Chain printers
- LED printers
- Band printers
1. Dot matrix printer
Dot matrix printers are commonly used in workplaces where physical impact with the paper is important, such as when the user is printing to carbon copy or pressure sensitive forms.
This type of printer can produce sheets of plain text very quickly.
They also are used to print very wide sheets as data processing departments often use when generating large reports with wide columns of information.
A dot matrix printer creates an image by using a mechanism called a print head, which contains a cluster of short pins arranged in one or more columns.
Speed of dot matrix printers is measured in characters per seconds (cps). It gives a speed of 50 to 500 cps.
2. Daisy-Wheel Printer
The daisy wheel printer is one kind of impact printer which uses the technology of a typewriter. As the printing mechanism looks like a daisy, for this it is called daisy wheel printer.
This types of printer gives a speed at about 25 to 55 cps. A character is printed in the paper when the hammer hits a petal written a character against it.
3. Ink jet printer
Ink jet printers create an image directly on the paper by spraying ink through tiny nozzles.
Many ink jet printers can produce photo quality images and for this they are often used to print pictures taken by digital camera.
Ink jet printer works with CMYK ( Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) color process.
4. Laser printer
Laser printer has a higher print quality and speed. But it is more expensive than ink jet printers. Laser printer uses the same technology as a photocopier.
Laser printer is ideal for office environment where several users can easily share the same printer via a network.
5. Line printer
The line printer which is the special kind of impact printer works like a dot matrix printer but uses a special wide print head that can print an entire line of text at one time.
Line printer don’t offer high resolution but they are very fast in nature. The fastest line printers can print 3000 lines of text per minute.
6. Drum printer
Drum printer looks like a large cylindrical drum. When the drum rotates, a hammer is placed behind the paper for each possible print positions one the paper.
This types of printers gives us a speed of about 300 to 2000 lines per minute.
7. Chain printer
Chain printer works like a drum printer. It has a rotating print chain around two pulleys. Every possible location has a hammer.
When the hammer hits the sheet and press the paper with the ribbons then the letter is placed at that location.
Chain printer gives a speed of 400 to 2500 characters per minute.
8. LED printer
LED printer is a small, lightweight printer which is best suited for small office. It is mostly similar to the laser printer except the source of light.
This types of printer provides a light generating from Light Emitting Diode (LED). LED printer is more effective then laser printer with more moving parts with it.
9. Band printer
A band printer features a rotating band embossed with alphanumeric characters.
To print a character, the machine rotates the band to the deserve character and then a small hammer taps the band, pressing the characters against the ribbon.
Band printers also very fast in nature although they sounds like a slow process. A good quality band printers can generate 2000 lines of text per minute.
How to choose best printer?
Actually, all the types of printers have the same use which is print the document on a paper.
We can not think of our official tasks without using a printer today.
It is totally depend up to you, that which printer you should buy. It depends on your work and the types of your office.
When you are looking to purchase a printer for your business, the first thing you need to consider is the specific needs of your business.
Do you need a printer that can print large quantities quickly or is more suited for printing small documents?
Are you looking for a printer that is easy to use or one that is more sophisticated?
Once you have determined the specific needs of your business, you can begin to look at the different types of printers available and choose the best one for your needs.
Some of the most common types of printers used in businesses are laser printers, inkjet printers, and photocopiers.
Laser printers are the most expensive but are also the most powerful and can print large quantities quickly.
Inkjet printers are cheaper than laser printers but can only print small quantities quickly.
Photocopiers are the cheapest printers and can print small quantities but are not as powerful as other printers.
I have tried my best to make this article very understandable and usable for you. I hope this guide will be very helpful for each of our readers.
