Conversion of number system – Octal to Binary

We will use two rules here to convert a number from octal to binary in this article. We know that octal is the 8 based number system where binary is the two based number system. One is for integer part and other is for fraction part. So, let’s go ahead with some example after learning the rules here.

Rules for integer

Example : Conversion of 7238 to equivalent binary number

Just like other number systems here also we can ignore zero at left at the time of converting an integer from octal to binary. This rules works as like as our generally used decimal number where we write 47 instead of 047.

Rules for fraction number

Example: Convert 0.0438 to equivalent binary number.

We can also ignore zero at right side at the time of converting a fraction number from octal to binary. The rule is as like as decimal decimal number where we write o.47 instead of 0.470

Now, we will see an example to convert a number from octal to binary. Let’s try to understand this.

Example: Conversion of 343.4058 to equivalent binary number

We can convert this number at a time. We need not to convert its integer and fraction part separately. At the time of our conversion from octal to binary we will ignore zeros at the left and at the right of radix point. We can also take necessary zeros there if needed.

As we can see, the total binary equivalent of the given octal number is (11100011.100000101)2 . However, you can use this rule to convert any octal number to binary number. You should try some other number now.
