MODEM which is the most common network device consists of two words MO from modulator and DEM from demodulator. MODEM is a communication device which works both in input and output mode. Modem transfer information from one computer to another. It is a hardware component to build network.
Types of MODEM
Normally, there are two types of MODEM used in computer network device.
1. Acoustic coupler modem
2. Direct modem
Acoustic coupler modem
Acoustic coupler modem gives a slower speed. This network device may remain built in in your PC. It is not expensive but no more uses now a days.
Direct modem gives more speed than acoustic coupler modem. It is connected with computer port using USB port. This is more expensive network device than acoustic coupler modem.
MODEM can be divided into two categories according to process of connection.
1. Internal modem
2. External modem
Internal modem is nothing but a card. This network device has to kept in the extension slot of computer motherboard. Generally, its transfer rate is 32 to 64 bit and gives a clock speed of 33 MHz.
The MODEM which is connected by cable with the communication port of computer is called external modem. But nowadays USB port external modem is more popular. It need not current supply for the MODEM separately. USB port modem gives more speed than serial port modem.
To establish a local area network, we need a central device which can connect all the computer is called Hub. Hub is a switching processor. It depends on the power of hub that how many computers you can connect with this hub.
Workstations, server, printer and other network resources are connected with the hub by its USB port. Hub gives a slower speed than switch. We can increase the number of workstations using hub. This network device is cheaper than switch.
Types of Hub
According to working functionality there are two types of hub.
1. Active hub
2. Passive hub
The hub which increases the value of signal and remove unnecessary signal is called active hub. Moreover, it can also process the signal. Sometimes, this type of hub is called intelligent hub.
Passive hub doesn’t increase the value of signal. Passive hub only helps to exchange information from computer to computer. This type of network devices are connected with active devices.

Router is another very popular network device which is used for internal networking. By router, we can send data from one network to another network. Some network of same protocol can also be connected by router. We can also increase the range of our network by router.

Gateway is being used to connect different network. When a network has different protocol then gateway is used to connect that device with the network. This network device is more strengthen and intelligent then router.
Gateway pass the data according to receiver’s protocol after data is reached into the gateway. Gateway is more expensive than router. Gateway can be divided into some categories like protocol gateway, address gateway according to their type of work.

Switch is a network device of many ports which helps to flow information. Function of switch is like hub. It can also be said as a bridge of some ports. Though it looks like hub but it exchanges data in a different manner among clients. Switch increases the performance of network and can communicate among many computers at a time.

NIC ( Network Interface Card )
Network interface card is used to establish connection among more than two computers. It is a network device which is also known as Network adapter, Lan card etc. It stays in extension slot of motherboard. It needs some software to activate NIC which is supplied by its builder company.
NIC exchanges signal as bit. Power of network of a computer depends mostly on its network interface card. Ethernet card is the mostly used network interface card. Wireless NIC has a antenna instead of port.
Bridge is also a network device which can connect more than one network. Bridge helps to divide a network in some small part or make it wider. Hub and switch can connect more than one network where bridge connects more than one small network. There are three categories of bridge like local bridge, remote bridge, wireless bridge.
Repeater makes the signal more strengthen. When we pass a signal through a cable it becomes weak after going a few distance. Then it needs to make stronger to go to the destination which can be done by a repeater. This network device can amplifies the signal.
