A stylus is an instrument like pen which is used to point, swipe or draw on a touchscreen like finger. It looks like a pen except it doesn’t need ink. Styli is the plural form of stylus. Some stylus pen gives the facility to write on a paper also. Here, the ink pen and stylus are on the same side or different side.

It has a conductive rubber which works instead of your finger on the touchscreen. Stylus saves our touchscreen from more pressure we give by our fingers. Moreover, we can use a stylus when we wear a hand glove.

Types of stylus pen

There are mainly two types of stylus we use today. They are as follows;

  • Active stylus
  • Passive or capacitive stylus

Active stylus

An active stylus is generally larger than passive stylus which has a tip like a pen. It includes internal memory, electronic erasers and pressure sensitivity that measure your given pressure. Active stylus is most popular among the artists because of its pressure sensitivity.

Its internal component has made it larger than passive one. We can use an active stylus with one device only.

Passive stylus or capacitive stylus

Passive stylus is the simplest type of stylus. It works through the electrical charge from the finger to screen. Passive stylus is also called capacitive stylus and by this we can tap directly on the touchscreen. Passive stylus is not accurate as active stylus.

It doesn’t have internal memory, or other electrical component like touch sensitivity. For this it can’t communicate with device. Capacitive stylus can be used in different touchscreen unlike active stylus.

Purpose of using a stylus

There are several purposes of using a stylus today with our device. Some of these are given bellow;
